Boondocking
Roadtripping seems to have its own lexicon. One of the terms we learned early was boondocking. That is to stay in a campsite or somewhere else without hook-ups such as electric, water or sewer. Boondocking also tends to be free or offered at a substantially reduced fee as compared to conventional campgrounds. These spots are typically found on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) lands such as National Forests, but it could also mean a staying overnight in a Walmart parking lot.
I had read about an amazing site just on the boundary of the Grand Teton National Park, so we decided to go and check it out.
Our drive through Grand Teton was breathtaking.
We live right next to the Rockies and are spoiled when it comes to amazing mountain views, but I have to say the vistas of the Teton range were stunning. You are driving along admiring a perfectly lovely meandering river and you turn a corner and POW – there they are! My photos do not do the mountains justice!
Before searching for our elusive free campground, we paid a visit to the famed Signal Mountain Lodge lounge for the ridiculously sized half order of nachos, delicious huckleberry margaritas and local beers.
The air was still crisp and we walked down to the water for a view of the lake. Our visit was the week before the Memorial Day long weekend, so crowds were light and the scenery spectacular.
The directions to the boondocking grounds turned out to be excellent. We drove up a boundary road and we came upon an over look with a number of other RVs and trailers. People had laid claim to their own little patches of land – some had built fire rings, others had clothes lines up. It was clear some of the guests had been there for sometime. And as soon as we turned the corner, we understood why.
We found out own little patch of grass and pulled in for the night. In the morning we awoke to a fabulous view and when we went to explore a bit we found a little stream running through the field. With the views of the mountains and the sounds of the stream we felt like we had an idyllic first boondocking experience!
